A Journey to Safer Drug Delivery

Patients deserve safe prescription drug delivery. Spurred by personal tragedy, Paul Edalat, Chairman, Founder, and CEO of Vivera, is determined to make it a reality by addressing the critical gaps in current prescribing practices.

Several leading publications have already recognized Mr. Edalat for his notable achievements.

Forbes Council’s review committee selected him as a member based on the depth and diversity of his professional background in leadership, management, and growth.

Orange County Business Journal named him an honorable nominee in its Excellence in Entrepreneur Awards and Innovator of The Year Awards for his forward-thinking leadership approach. ‘

LA Times B2B Publishing listed him as a CEO Visionary for his notable contributions in the healthcare space.

It’s no secret why CIO Business World named him one of the Top 10 Most Inspirational Business Leaders to Watch in 2023.

Here’s his story.

Transforming Personal Tragedy into Opportunity

Mr. Edalat discovered his passion for health and wellness at a young age. His enthusiasm led him to the fitness and wellness sectors, where he had several successful businesses.

While his love for athletics and fitness never waned, a personal tragedy shifted his priorities.

In 2004, his younger brother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. For those unfamiliar, Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that affects a part of the immune system called the lymphatic system. As it progresses, it affects the body’s ability to fight an infection.

While supporting his brother throughout his cancer battle, he noticed numerous flaws within the healthcare system. One of the most glaring issues was the lack of safety protocols in prescribing practices.

Mr. Edalat’s brother was in much pain, mostly from chemotherapy. To help manage his pain, his doctor prescribed him high doses of opioids.

He built up a tolerance to the medication quickly. Without adequate safeguards, he could increase his dose at his discretion. It wasn’t long before he developed an addiction to his opioid medication.

For two years, Mr. Edalat watched his brother struggle with cancer and, later, addiction until he passed away.

This painful experience, combined with his background in health and wellness, ignited his determination to create Vivera, a company that prioritizes patients over profit.

Vivera’s core philosophy revolves around placing patients at the heart of all decisions. This patient-centric approach ensures their needs, experiences, and well-being are always the primary considerations, guiding the development of therapies that genuinely enhance their quality of life.

What it Means to Be a Healthcare Leader

According to Mr. Edalat, having a clear vision is non-negotiable to be an effective healthcare leader. Vision gives you clarity and guides your decisions, ensuring you move in the right direction.

Healthcare leaders should also be able to anticipate upcoming trends. This foresight allows leaders to position the organizations at the cutting edge of innovation, ensuring everyone is always a step ahead.

Adaptability is another crucial trait required for successful healthcare leaders. The healthcare sector is in constant flux, be it due to new regulations, the emergence of new diseases, or technological advancements. Mr. Edalat says, “As leaders, we must be agile, ready to modify our strategies and approaches at a moment’s notice to best serve our patients and organizations.”

Mr. Edalat claims that one of the most challenging aspects of leading in the healthcare domain is the myriad of obstacles that come along the way. From crisis management to deciphering intricate regulations, the hurdles can seem insurmountable. However, Mr. Edalat learned that resilience is paramount. Remaining composed and providing unwavering guidance, especially in adversity, separates good leaders from great ones.

How to Remain Competitive

Life is dynamic. Priorities change. Mr. Edalat regularly assesses the trajectory of Vivera. He recommends being decisive in your actions but remaining flexible and open to feedback.

Mr. Edalat understands the importance of building solid relationships to remain competitive. “Surround yourself with a competent team, seek mentorship, and always lead by example,” he advises. “Always act with integrity. Your vision and decisions should be rooted in ethical considerations and a genuine desire to serve and add value to your customers.”
3 Non-Negotiables for Building a World-Class Team

Building and managing a motivated and effective team is a multi-faceted process that requires leadership skills, clear communication, and a supportive work environment.

To build a successful team, Mr. Edalat advises the following:

  • Have a clear vision and mission. Ensure every team member understands the company’s vision and mission. This provides a sense of purpose and direction.
  • Hire the right people. Look for candidates who have the required skills and align with the company’s values and culture. Don’t forget to consider their ability to work in teams and adapt to change.
  • Prioritize effective communication. Foster open communication channels where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, concerns, and feedback. Regularly update the team on company news, changes, and milestones.

Honoring His Brother’s Legacy with Safer Drug Delivery

After his brother’s death, Mr. Edalat acknowledged the need for safer and more efficient methods of prescribing and dispensing medications.

He met with one of his brilliant long-time friends and colleagues, Mehdi Hatamian, Ph.D. Together, they invented ZICOH, a patented, high-tech, AI-powered smart prescription drug delivery device.

ZICOH dispenses precise medication doses only to the registered patient, leaving little room for misuse or diversion. The timing feature supports adherence by restricting access to off-schedule doses.

ZICOH integrates seamlessly with ZICOH Connect™, a synchronized, cloud-based software system with strong data organization and AI capabilities. They collect and aggregate real-time prescribing data and generate actionable insights to facilitate prescription medication adherence, oversight, and compliance.

Ultimately, the ZICOH medication delivery system aims to provide the targeted release of medications and may offer a solution to better control medications with a high propensity for misuse.

Mr. Edalat has seen first-hand how difficult taking medications can be for patients who are sick and how easy it is to become dependent on addictive prescriptions.

ZICOH may help prevent addictive drugs from getting into the wrong hands and ensure patients do not suffer the harms of addiction while at their most vulnerable.

What’s Next in the Pipeline?

ZICOH isn’t the only product in Vivera’s arsenal. The Company also plans to bring TABMELT to the market. This patented and patent-pending sublingual drug delivery system allows patients to take medication by dissolving a tablet under the tongue.

This delivery route may lead to more instantaneous and accurate absorption than oral drug delivery.

Patients deserve top-quality care, and Mr. Edalat wants to ensure it is accessible to everyone. His goal is to improve how patients take medications and make them safer.

Mr. Edalat’s long-term mission is to work with providers to get ZICOH in every patient’s hands.

Bernard Wanyama: Navigating the Tech Landscape

Technology offers the best opportunity for people, young and old, who wants to seek a career. Leaders here can contribute to the opening up of access to technology careers for more people. Bernard Wanyama’s journey in the dynamic realm of Information Technology leadership reflects a trajectory marked by experience, resilience, and a commitment to technological innovation.

Here’s an interview you don’t wanna miss:

Brief our audience about your journey as a business leader until your current position at Syntech Associates Limited. What challenges have you had to overcome to reach where you are today?

I started out as an Information Security Officer at Bank of Africa – Uganda in 2006, before joining Barclays Bank the next year in an IT Infrastructure Management role.

At Barclays I spent nearly five years as part of the team driving change in the Sub Saharan Africa region. The transformation was around modernizing network infrastructure, data centers, the core banking platform and moving towards a shared services model.

After those five years, I moved on and started SYNTECH along with partners who were friends from university.

We set out to run SYNTECH as a systems integration firm, focused on networks, server systems and a bit of custom software development. Our clientele was largely financial institutions and government entities in Uganda, as well as the other East African countries.

At a personal level, it was a transition from technical expert to a business leader, something that came with many hard lessons.

Three things still stand out for me:

  • there is immeasurable value in staying close to your customers with a relationship-based approach
  • partners and suppliers make it possible for any organisation to access resources and opportunities
  • people: one has to have an eye for good people and work hard to retain them

The money aspect has always been the hardest to navigate, access to finance, cost of finance as well as being able to afford talent.

Overall, the journey has been both challenging and rewarding.

Tell us something more about Syntech Associates Limited. and its mission and vision.

We are an IT systems integration firm, offering expertise in cybersecurity, networks, cloud computing and software development to clients in the East and Central Africa market.
We have been in business since 2010 and we represent major tech vendors such as Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco, VMware and many others.

At SYNTECH, our mission is  “To offer practical, cutting-edge solutions with unsurpassed quality of service to meet customer needs and challenges”

Our vision is “become the most competent ICT service provider in the East Africa region and beyond with dedication to fulfilling our clients’ requirements”.

How do you build and manage a motivated and effective team?

In my view, it’s about taking a conscious decision to lead the team. Early on, what worked well for me was leading from the front and being part of hard work. Later on, I learnt that being able to communicate clearly and set expectations was more important than anything else.

Ultimately, people fit in the team for as long as it aligns with their needs, and there comes a time to part ways when that is no longer the case. One must be able to have career growth conversations with team members and enable them to have a stake in their personal development. I am proud of many team members who have moved on to do bigger things in other organisations and other continents.

Where do you envision yourself to be in the long run, and what are your future goals for Syntech Associates Limited?

Evolution is a question we all have to deal with, at a personal level, as well as at a business level. In the future, we shall transition into serving the entire African continent. We shall deepen our expertise in areas like cybersecurity, IoT and cloud computing. We also plan to diversify our service offering into new areas like training and R&D.

What change would you like to bring to the Tech industry if given a chance?

At a personal level, my conviction is that tech offers the best opportunity for people, young and old, seeking a career. I believe I can contribute to opening up access to technology careers for more people. I spend a lot of time volunteering for ISACA and partnering with other organisations to close the skills gap and expand the tech industry in Uganda and the rest of the world.

What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs aspiring to venture into Tech?

Tech is the most exciting place to be right now for solving social and economic problems, and it is going to remain that way for a while. The opportunity to make a positive impact is very pronounced, especially in the emerging markets where there is immense demand for solutions in areas like finance, mobility, education and healthcare. In a sea of opportunities, budding entrepreneurs need to carve out a niche for themselves.

In this article, I will share my thoughts on how individuals and institutions can navigate and harness these forces for positive change.

Technology as the Catalyst

Emerging technologies have always been at the forefront of driving innovation and change. From the advent of the internet to the proliferation of smartphones, technology has altered the way we communicate, work, and learn. The current era is witnessing a wave of groundbreaking technologies, such as virtual reality, AI and blockchain, that have the potential to disrupt and enhance various industries.

In business, these technologies offer unparalleled opportunities for growth and efficiency. For example, AI-driven analytics can provide valuable insights into customer behavior and market trends, enabling companies to make data-driven decisions. Virtual reality can revolutionize employee training and customer engagement by creating immersive experiences. However, adapting to these technologies requires a willingness to embrace change and invest in education and skill development. Businesses that prioritize digital literacy and innovation will be better positioned to thrive in the tech-driven future.

In education, technology is transforming the way we learn and teach. Online platforms and e-learning tools have become essential in providing accessible education. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this digital shift, highlighting the importance of flexible and adaptable learning models. Students and educators have had to adapt to virtual classrooms and remote collaboration, and this experience will likely shape the future of education.

Revolutions and Social Movements

Simultaneously, we are living in an era of social revolutions and movements that challenge the status quo. The rise of social media has empowered individuals to mobilize and advocate for change on a global scale. Movements like #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, and climate activism have forced society to confront issues of systemic inequality, discrimination, and environmental sustainability.

In business, these social movements have pushed for corporate social responsibility and ethical practices. Companies are now expected to take a stance on social and environmental issues, and consumers increasingly support businesses aligned with their values. This shift underscores the importance of purpose-driven entrepreneurship and the need for businesses to contribute positively to society.

In education, social revolutions call for a more inclusive and equitable system. Access to quality education remains a global challenge, and educators must address disparities in learning opportunities. Social justice movements demand diverse and inclusive curricula that reflect the experiences and contributions of marginalized communities. It is essential to empower students with the knowledge and skills to be informed, responsible global citizens.

Crisis Management and Resilience

While technology and social revolutions offer immense potential, we cannot overlook the role of crises in shaping our world. Whether it’s a global pandemic, economic recession, or environmental disaster, unforeseen crises can disrupt businesses and education systems.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a recent example of how a crisis can impact both sectors. Businesses had to adapt to remote work and changing consumer behavior, while schools and universities had to transition to online learning. The ability to respond swiftly and with resilience became a key differentiator.

In business, crisis management and contingency planning are essential. Companies must be prepared to pivot their strategies and operations in response to unforeseen challenges. Flexibility, adaptability, and a focus on employee and customer well-being are crucial during times of crisis.

In education, the pandemic highlighted the need for robust digital infrastructure and preparedness. Institutions must invest in technology and training to ensure continuity of learning in challenging circumstances. Moreover, crises have shed light on the importance of mental health and well-being in education. Students and educators alike need support systems to navigate the emotional toll of uncertainty and disruption.

Navigating the Intersection

To thrive in the ever-evolving intersection of technology, social revolutions, and crises, individuals and institutions should consider the following strategies:

**Embrace Lifelong Learning**: In both business and education, the ability to adapt and learn continuously is paramount. Stay curious and open to new ideas, technologies, and perspectives.

**Foster Innovation**: Encourage creativity and innovation within your organization or classroom. Embrace new technologies and methodologies that can enhance productivity and engagement.

**Prioritize Inclusivity**: Ensure that your business or educational institution is inclusive and equitable. Embrace diversity and consider the needs of all stakeholders.

**Prepare for Change**: Develop contingency plans and strategies for crisis management. The ability to pivot and adapt in challenging times can make the difference between survival and stagnation.

**Stay Informed**: Keep abreast of emerging technologies and trends in your industry. Stay informed about social issues and be prepared to engage in constructive dialogue.

**Promote Well-being**: Prioritize the physical and mental well-being of employees, students, and yourself. Resilience in the face of crises begins with individual and collective well-being.

**Seek Collaboration**: Engage with your community, industry peers, and educational networks. Collaborative efforts can lead to innovative solutions and shared resources.

The intersection of emerging technologies, social revolutions, and crises may present challenges, but it also offers boundless opportunities for growth and positive change. As we navigate this complex landscape, let us remain adaptable, compassionate, and committed to building a brighter future for business and education. Together, we can harness these forces to drive innovation, equity, and resilience.

This sense the interaction with Waheed and CIOBusinessWorld that introduces his idea to us.

Below are the highlights of the interview:

Brief our audience about your journey as a business leader until your current position at United Cooperative Assurance What challenges have you had to overcome to reach where you are today?

It was a very exciting journey despite all challenges that I faced alongside different wonderful teams whom I truly enjoyed working with throughout my career, trust me when I say; the real taste of success comes only at the end of long and bitter roads! I started my journey approximately 24 years ago, I started my career straight ahead into the IT line in Healthcare, I worked in “King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center” known to be one of the very leading and large enterprise healthcare organizations in Saudi Arabia, I started my career at the field of IT Infrastructure and Operations stand, and escalated the ladder into different job levels across my career throughout different IT management positions and levels crossing from team leader, to mid-management, to senior management, and finally I am standing in the executive management level. Working in highly complex industries such as Healthcare and Insurance has truly crafted and sharpened my business experience throughout different business aspects including technical, management, operations, and strategical aspects.

Tell us something more about United Cooperative Assurance and its mission and vision.

United Cooperative Assurance (UCA) is a leading insurance company that is publicly listed in the Saudi Arabian Market with a capital of 400 million Saudi Riyal (SAR). The head office of the company is in Riyadh, and the company started to operate on 2009, The company is contributing to the overall economy of Saudi Arabia and helping the country to achieve the 2030 Vision of Saudi Arabia through provisioning of Insurance solutions including motor, medical, and other general insurance products. The vision of UCA is to create the kingdom’s most innovative, professional, and sustainable domestic insurer! Hence, to achieve this vision, our day-to-day mission is to create an environment which promotes the development of young Saudi insurance professionals at the core while developing leading edge agile platforms designed around our clients and their needs. UCA aims to strengthen its partnerships with our regulators, intermediaries, and world class reinsurers by embedding sustainable and transparent business practices.

How do you build and manage a motivated and effective team?

Human Resources is the bedrock of any sustainable work for any organization, keeping the team always motivated and effective comes only through a clear strategy for engaging people – IT and digital transformation leaders usually don’t deal with IT staff as the only team to make the transformation, it’s the entire company with all involved functional teams that we should bring together, converge, and create a collaborative and inspiring environment for them , this should be applied also to all enterprise-level initiatives that are transformational by nature. Depending on the strategy comes the actions, but it worth mentioning some of the most common tactics to consider; first try to invite and engage all individuals of the teams from the initiation phase of any undertake (avoid bringing them in the middle for the sake of achieving certain tasks only), let them feel they’re part of the initiative, and influencers on decisions, second, turn the team environment into a learning academy environment and cultivate the culture of continuous education, this is very important side to naturally grow and advance in-house skills and talent level which will lead to have a more effective and capable team. Third, promote for innovation, and creativity, and shift them from being “problem finders” to “solutions finders” and coach them how to be always part of the solution rather than being part of the problem. Fourth, break the ice, and bring joy through different side activities, you may use gamification techniques. There are plenty of other ways and methods that leaders can take to manage their team to make them more motivated and effective teams.

Where do you envision yourself to be in the long run, and what are your future goals for United Cooperative Assurance?

In continuation of my journey; I am looking for more thriving and to keep going forward through the technology path but with significant contribution and influential works to achieve the vision of my country and my company together through advancement and achieving of excellence in digitalization and bringing modern technologies to improve community and people lives. Furthermore, I am looking forward to being an entrepreneur to bring innovative solutions to business and community problems in addition to implementing new ideas that bring more comfort, happiness, and wellbeing to our people and country.

In the near future, where do you envision yourself, and how do you plan to accelerate and drive forward the process of change?

We live in a very fast changing era driven by the unprecedented rapid technology evolvement and advancement, it’s indeed a challenging situation that require a strong and solid leadership skills to continue the game, therefore,  I plan to continue in that leadership position for the near future, and I look forward to modernize the IT operating model in my company to be extra agile and to meet the new business dynamics and requirements through embracement of new operating models such as DevOps, and as AI has entered even a new generation which is changing the world again, therefore, I must accelerate the adoption of more AI technologies enriched by Big Data for different business use cases.

As a successful leader, how do you manage to strike a balance between your professional commitments and personal life?

Achieving a work-life balance is amongst hardest matters to achieve and maintain, it’s not as easy thing as it may sounds to be; especially for leaders of critical business functions that have near to zero-tolerance to failure, such leaders used to have many sleepless nights in their life and found it very difficult to achieve the balance, therefore, one should draw a strategy to achieve the balance, more importantly to be committed to it, there are some few strategically points that I follow to maintain the balance as example, one of which is to maximize the output of the “productivity over time” formula by learning the skill of hyper focus to achieve more in less time, in other words, drive your time, otherwise the time will drive you, so dedicate yourself only for work during working hours, and vice versa (how to get rid of distractions is the skill that one need to acquire here), on the other hand, one need also to be flexible in defining his\her working hours vs. life hours of his week based on different planned or unplanned activities.

Describe in detail the values and the work culture that drives United Cooperative Assurance?

UCA has many values across different internal functions that may vary only by relativity to work, however there are four (4) core values that UCA stands on, first, is the “Quality” whereby UCA’s success is measured upon a considerable number of clients selecting us for their belief in our ability to meet their expectations in terms of Price, Quality Service and Specialized Expertise. Second is “Empowerment” of our employees by offering a work environment with equal opportunities to employees for further professional and personal growth, we believe in our work force, and we are inspired to work as a team towards the accomplishment of our goals. Third is “Commitment” to conducting our business according to the highest norms of ethical standards, competence, and integrity where we remain stable and reliable to perform to the best of our knowledge, skills and abilities amidst the challenges that constantly face us. Finally, the fourth core value is about “Communication”, to establish relationships with clients that we care for, we pride ourselves in keeping our workforce and clients well informed about relevant information through efficient communication and information systems that exceed the standard services.

What change would you like to bring to the Tech industry if given a chance?

Undoubtedly, tech industry is the innovation industry that keep brining charming state-of-the-art solutions and products to our lives which truly change our lives, most of these changes are for the good of the human kind but with some drawbacks and undesired outcomes that may get produced in the process, therefore, if there is something to bring to this industry is apply more data privacy and mind protection measures beside more ethical measures that should be applied on the global level to prevent certain contents from being shared and even go viral, trivia is invading the new generation and we need our world to be a safer place for our children knowing that the “Internet” is considered the World itself to a majority of our children and teenagers. We need to protect everyone for harmful contents that ethical bases would agree on, not only this, but also reduction in trivial contents and limitation from going viral.

Undeniably, technology is playing a significant role in almost every sector. How are you           leveraging technological advancements to make your solutions resourceful?

Understanding new technologies in term of their critical capabilities, maturity, sourcing, and their use cases in business is a key knowledge resource that I keep myself always updated with, think of these modern advanced technologies like the tools in a toolkit box in a hand of a craftsman, he can do magic if he knows how and when to use each tool. For example, the robotic process automation (RPA) is one of the AI technologies that can be very useful and mature enough to automate a routine and highly repeated manual activities which may require lots of manpower hours to do, using RPA as the right tool to automate this sort of activities within certain scenario should meet your objective to save cost and time in addition to maintaining a consistent performance and efficiency, and so on and so forth.

Can you discuss your approach to talent management and development within the IT department, and how you build and lead high-performing teams to execute the organization’s IT strategy?

The answer to this question is embedded within my answer to question #3 above, here I am quoting the same statement “invite and engage all individuals of the teams from the initiation phase of any undertake (avoid bringing them in the middle for the sake of achieving certain tasks only), let them feel they’re part of the initiative, and influencers on decisions, second, turn the team environment into a learning academy environment and cultivate the culture of continuous education, this is very important side to naturally grow and advance in-house skills and talent level which will lead to have a more effective and capable team”, in addition, some other ideas to talent management and development can be used such as setting different Professional Certifications or other Educational Quests as annual targets and objectives for employees, this is to help spreading the culture and make sure that everyone sails within the same boat. Another habit that leaders may use is by requesting attendants of different training courses, conferences, and symposiums to write and submit a reflection paper after attending such sessions, in which they should suggest how to use what they learn to improve any of the business aspects exist in the company, that reflection paper should be reviewed, discussed further and approved if found feasible, once approved it should turn into a new initiative and become part of our objectives and the owner of the reflection paper should lead or co-lead that initiative.

What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs aspiring to venture into Tech?

Investing in Tech is one of the most attractive entrepreneurship fields that is full of inspiring opportunities, with high chances of success if it follows the right course of thoughts and actions, entrepreneurs in this field should find the right idea, turn it into the right product, at the right time, and by following the proper rational path that should guarantee sustainability to the startup company. It’s a big topic to talk about, however, let me just shed some light on the starting point “finding the idea”, there are quite good number of success stories of great tech ideas that turned into breakthrough products that changed people lives, or caused very positive impact on communities at scale, however, there ae also other examples of other good to great ideas that couldn’t fly or “at the best” could not survive for long, first you need to make sure that the idea is either coming with an innovative solution to a chronic problem that sometimes people get used to deal with it in somehow and tends to forgot that it’s a problem or that it can be done better, alternatively you may come with an idea that should touch human senses in somehow and improve people lives but not necessary to be meant for fixing a problem, in either ways you need to make sure that the idea is viable, and can be turned into a real competing product with reasonable cost, remember that some ideas were great but unfortunately they appear in the wrong time were consumers are not ready for it yet. If you’re there then build your prototype and create a minimum viable product (MVP) to sense the people interaction with it, it’s the best time to introduce the idea to public and exactly to your targeted customers to assess and measure how much you attracted of their attention, and how easy and fast they adapt the product.

Visionary Stewardship

His academic journey, fortified by degrees from prestigious institutions such as Politecnico di Milano and University of Lausanne, laid the groundwork for a career marked by distinction. From the meticulous domain of project management to the intricate orchestration of pharmaceutical logistics, Augusto’s ascent within Bigmar Group exemplified a trajectory of continual growth.

The zenith of his career unfolded at Sintetica SA, where he orchestrated a narrative of unparalleled success. As the Corporate CEO, Augusto’s strategic vision propelled Sintetica into international prominence, fostering an environment where individual empowerment became the cornerstone of corporate decisions. His innovative “Human-Centred Organization” model represented not just a shift in structure but a cultural metamorphosis, championing responsibility, meritocracy, and a departure from hierarchical rigidity.

The narrative extends beyond corporate realms, with Augusto assuming pivotal roles at Amis Consulting SA and Switzerland Innovation Park Ticino. These endeavors not only reflect his unyielding commitment to innovation but also his role as a catalyst in shaping the future of global business landscapes.

Augusto’s story is one of accolades, earned not through mere corporate achievements but through a commitment to fostering innovation, sustainability, and a profound respect for individuals within and outside organizational boundaries. His leadership transcends the boardroom, making him a beacon for those who see in innovation not just a corporate strategy but a cultural imperative. As he embarks on a new chapter, Augusto Mitidieri’s narrative remains a testament to the transformative power of visionary leadership in the ever-evolving pharmaceutical landscape.

Human-Centric Leadership

Augusto Mitidieri’s transformative leadership at Sintetica, a Swiss pharmaceutical powerhouse, narrates a saga of innovation, culture shift, and a profound commitment to the human element. As the Corporate CEO, Augusto wielded not just executive authority but a visionary zeal that reshaped the very DNA of the organization.

In recognizing that innovation transcends product development, Augusto pioneered the “Human-Centred Organization,” a paradigm shift from hierarchical structures to a model based on responsibility and meritocracy. This profound cultural change redefined the managerial philosophy, with managers evolving from controllers to coaches, fostering a culture of responsibility, autonomy, and accountability for results.

The pillars of this groundbreaking model are built on passion, engagement, trust, and autonomy. Passion, the driving force defining the real mission, was coupled with transparent communication to engage individuals in the organizational values. Trust and autonomy became the linchpins, fostering delegation and agility in decision-making, culminating in a virtuous dynamic for team success. Respect, a core element, permeated internal and external interactions, valuing differences and creating a harmonious environment.

Smiling, seemingly simple but profoundly relevant, became the hallmark of the corporate culture, epitomizing the company’s identity as a “great place to work.” The organizational purpose transcended mere profit maximization; it aimed for the maximization of success, defined by equal priority to profit and happiness. The Corporate Sustainability function, encompassing Human Resources, became integral to this purpose, emphasizing that sustainability pertains to people first.

This visionary strategy aimed at diffusing Human-Centric leadership and peripheral decisional autonomy throughout the organization. Managers and talents underwent continuous high-level training, fostering a culture of perpetual improvement in the digital age. The Human-Centred Organization, rooted in responsibility and merit, defied classical hierarchical norms, offering a dynamic and supportive platform for employees to grow based on their skills and potential.

Augusto Mitidieri’s narrative of leadership at Sintetica isn’t just a corporate tale; it’s a testament to the transformative power of placing the human element at the core of innovation and success.

Transforming Organizations from Within

Augusto Mitidieri’s passion for driving change and making it happen has been the cornerstone of his illustrious career as a CEO. Recognizing the need for organizations to be proactive and embrace continuous improvement, Augusto dedicated a significant part of his career to innovation—a task that posed a formidable challenge.

As the CEO of a company with a mission of leadership through innovation, Augusto faced the complex task of creating an organizational culture that could consistently generate innovation as a routine. The strategy he crafted rested on two pillars: uncompromising quality achieved through continuous improvement and the global diffusion of innovations.

The linchpin for successful execution was the human-centred organization—a model that champions diffused leadership and peripheral decisional autonomy. This approach, grounded in values like respect, trust, skills, knowledge, passion, and a genuine smile, aimed to engage people across all levels of the company. With a clear focus on strategic objectives and meticulous execution, engaged individuals became the driving force behind the continuous generation of innovations throughout the organization.

Now, Augusto is distilling this successful management experience into a forthcoming book. His narrative revolves around the belief that innovation is an inside-out process. He emphasizes two levels of innovation—the first being the creation of direction and strategy, the crucial stage dependent on the organization’s vision, values, and purpose. Once this internal foundation is solid, the second level involves making innovation happen through an organization that values individuals as human-centred leaders, fostering meaningful and coherent innovation both within and beyond company borders. Augusto’s core message is clear: for a company to be truly innovative, it should look not for ideas, but for people who embody a human-centred approach to innovation.

Lisa Engle Ireland: Navigating a Career in Nonprofit and Longevity Science

One of the most intriguing aspects of life lies in our capacity to influence our own destinies. While human destiny remains beyond our control, active development of medical technologies is helping us shape the length and the quality of our lives.

With over 25 years committed to community engagement and charitable work, Lisa Engle Ireland leads the Longevity Science Foundation on a mission to extend healthy human longevity.

Lisa Engle Ireland has generously devoted a significant part of her life to philanthropy. We had the chance to learn more about Lisa Engle Ireland story, her motivation and Lisa Engle Ireland role in promoting healthy aging.

Below are the highlights of the interview:

What inspired you to pursue a career in your industry, and how did you rise to your current position as CEO?

I earned my BA in communications and political science, but upon graduating, I felt a strong desire to help people and make a lasting impact through philanthropic work. I was drawn to endeavors aimed at promoting equitable access to resources. This prompted me to explore opportunities within nonprofit organizations, which in turn led to a fulfilling career spanning over 25 years in nonprofit leadership.

My journey began with community development organizations in Orleans County, New York, where I worked on initiatives related to community development, fundraising and resource accessibility. I take pride in the impact I was able to make in my home community during this time.

I then moved on to work at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where I served as the Director of Donor Relations & Stewardship, and the Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC), where I held the position of Vice President for Institutional Advancement. It was during my tenure in these roles that I gained a deep appreciation for the importance of bolstering scientific pursuits and aiding researchers, leading me to explore the possibilities of working with research funding.

A little over a year ago, a recruiter contacted me and introduced me to the work of the Longevity Science Foundation. The organization’s mission to enhance accessibility to longevity medicine and care by funding groundbreaking aging research resonated with me: throughout my career, I have remained steadfast in my commitment to ensuring equality of resource access. However, my motivation extends beyond professional alignment – like many of us, I have family members affected by age-related diseases, and I am acutely aware of the profound challenges these illnesses bring to the lives of individuals and their loved ones. This serves as a fuel for my dedication to our mission of promoting healthier, longer lives for all.

As a female CEO, what strategies have you used to overcome gender-related challenges in your career journey?

We are making strides in achieving equal opportunities and fostering workplaces free from sexism. Nonetheless, challenges arise, and my experience dictates that embracing open and honest communication is instrumental in overcoming such obstacles.

Both the nonprofit sector and the field of longevity research boast a wealth of remarkable female leaders, and championing their achievements has consistently been a priority for me. It is essential to highlight the impact that women leaders make, serving as a driving force in dismantling lingering biases. I am happy to have been both supportive of and supported by the female trailblazers in our fields.

Finally, I can’t understate the value of being prepared and informed. Some of our peers continue to grapple with misconceptions concerning women in the workplace. In this landscape, readiness becomes an indispensable asset, particularly when subjected to scrutiny.

Can you highlight a significant achievement or turning point that played a pivotal role in your career trajectory?

Assuming my first CEO role at United Way of Orleans County marked a pivotal moment in my professional journey. The opportunity allowed me to amalgamate all my experiences into one position, helping me create meaningful change within my community while engaging with business leaders, donors, elected officials, and others.

The role required a multifaceted skill set, including financial acumen, executive leadership, fundraising, advocacy, and community program awareness, while maintaining a commitment to United Way’s mission, vision, and values that underpin our collective work.

How do you foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within your company?

At the LSF, we work closely with pioneering early-stage research that pushes the boundaries of both longevity medicine and science at large. The exceptional quality of this research serves as a tremendous source of inspiration. I leverage this opportunity to spotlight the remarkable achievements of these scientists, fuelling our team’s motivation.

I lead by example and continually seek opportunities to optimize and enhance our operations. This involves identifying innovative solutions and tools that streamline our workflow, ultimately elevating our global impact and effectiveness.

Can you share an example of a difficult decision you had to make and the factors you considered before making it?

I oversaw a complete restructuring of multiple departments at the RMSC – a process that involved bringing together various teams. I adopted an inclusive approach to ensure the success of the reorganization process: I listened and learned about all the work that was being conducted in each department and understood the leadership styles.

Before implementing a new structure, I took deliberate steps to ensure that every staff member felt heard and that their perspectives were considered.

I made certain that each decision was aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and values, thereby guiding the decision-making process toward a path that resonated with RMSC’s overarching principles.

If you have any other additional details which we might have missed out on or that you want to highlight in the profile, please feel free to share them.

Community engagement holds a lot of importance for me. Over the years, I’ve dedicated a considerable amount of my time to volunteering within my local community. Currently, I hold the position of Advisory Board Member at Canandaigua National Bank and Trust. I’ve recently taken on a role as a Board Member with Miss Julie’s School of Beauty – an organization dedicated to supporting survivors of human trafficking.

In the past, I had the pleasure of serving as the President and Trustee of the Brockport Central School District Board of Education. I was also a Member of the NYS Commissioner of Education Roundtable and held the position of Vice President within the Monroe County School Board Association.

Lisa Anna Palmer: A Journey of Empowerment, Vision, and Impact

You can hate more but you can never love less. The hope to make the world a better place keeps us all going. In today’s competitive world, helping those in management positions is also crucial so they can make better decisions and have clarity in life. With the same vision, Lisa Anna Palmer is helping people in management positions to love their life as a leader. Lisa is the Founder and CEO of Light Your Leadership Inc.

Lisa is on a purpose roadmap that outlines how to lead effectively in a changing world. Additionally, she and her team at Light Your Leadership Inc. is growing a platform that shines a light on leaders who put people and the planet first. Thus, we at CIO Business World unleash the full potential of Lisa through an interview to learn about the techniques she uses to bring change.

Below are the highlights of the interview:

Brief our audience about your journey as an entrepreneur. What inspired you to start your own business?

I burned out three times by the age of 38. After spending two decades working within corporate Human Resources & Organizational Development and Organizational Effectiveness roles, both as a management consultant at a Big Six Firm and then within HR roles at two Canadian Crown Corporations, I was inspired to start my own company. As my consulting and coaching practice took off, I realized that I wanted to focus on leadership development because lack of leadership is at the root of every organizational and societal issue. Great leadership is at the heart of every success.

Tell us something more about your company and its mission and vision.

Our vision is to make the world a better workplace for all by helping those in management positions to learn to love their life as a leader. We do this using the principles featured in my international bestselling book, Light A Fire In Their Hearts: The Truth About Leadership and the SCALE approach, which stands for Self-Awareness, Connection, Accountability, Legacy, and Elevating others. These help managers and executives take their leadership to the next level as they learn tools and techniques to unleash potential and forces for good in themselves and others.

In addition, we have the PURPOSE Road Map, which outlines how to lead effectively in a post-pandemic world, including:

1. Putting people and the planet first

2. Understanding the struggle

3. Renewing the culture

4. Psychological safety and physical security

5. Office set-up and technology, including AI

6. Service-minded leadership

7. Evolving and elevating leadership capacity at all levels

We are also dedicated to growing a platform that shines a light on leaders who put people and the planet first.

Where do you envision yourself to be in the long run, and what are your future goals for your company?

I envision growing Light Your Leadership Inc. by establishing a Fractional Chief Leadership Officer practice. My goal remains to do my part to ease workplace suffering in as many organizations as possible and make work meaningful and joyful so that people want to be, do, and feel their very best. We need to bring back pride in work well done and strive for excellence in healthier ways that bring about good, rather than using methods and approaches that harm people and the environment.

I plan to raise awareness of CEOs and Boards so they see the importance of introducing and prioritizing Chief Leadership Officer roles. With over 50% of managers looking to leave their position (Gallup), 70% of people offered promotions saying “no” (Ivanti), 69% of managers being afraid of speaking to their employees (Harris Poll), and 57% of employees are reporting that they are being disrespected by their manager (Pew Research), we need to focus on leadership development at all levels, all ages, and all backgrounds.

Waiting to send managers to a workshop when they get promoted is insufficient.  To steer organizations, society, and our economy in the right direction, we need to elevate leadership so that it is integrated as a way of being from the start. Leadership development needs to start early and to be viewed as lifelong learning.

I am also working on my second book, Leadership In A Post-Pandemic World, to explore a revolutionized post-pandemic workplace and organizational renewal.

In the near future, where do you envision yourself, and how do you plan to accelerate and drive forward the process of change?

I took stock about two months ago about what differentiates me. I had the realization that prior to launching my own company, I had spent most of my time in corporate settings advising and coaching vice presidents and aspiring vice presidents (i.e., directors and senior directors). I also found that coaching managers and helping them become better versions of themselves led them to realize their deep discontent with their current employers. They then beg me to help them leave their company because they don’t have the formal authority to implement change and feel stuck with traditional command and control senior managers.

This pained me, so I’ve decided to focus on coaching vice presidents and aspiring vice presidents (and equivalents) because they have greater authority and access to resources. Therefore, when they transform, they can stay with their current employer and effect real and meaningful changes to their workplace. This benefits their downline and thus helps middle managers in the long run. They are also the CEO feeder group, so when we help them be the best version of themselves, we help the entire organization solidify its future.

Outstanding leadership is contagious as elevated leaders become role models for others. Investing in vice presidents and aspiring vice presidents makes workplaces better. Strong, compassionate, courageous, and competent transformational executives know how to grow and inspire other leaders, which creates a powerful ripple effect at all levels. This is the key to delivering results in healthier and more sustainable ways. Leadership development underscores strategic advantage and underpins excellence. Case in point, a Metrix Global study found that executive coaching can have a 788% return on investment (ROI) based on factors including increases in productivity and employee retention (Forbes, 2023).

Coaching top managers to love their life unleashes their human potential. When leaders can connect with people they work with from this elevated place of purpose, passion, and fulfilment, the potential for their organization’s success grows exponentially.

As a successful Women leader, how do you manage to strike a balance between your professional commitments and personal life?

This is yet another example of lifelong learning because while I strive for balance and have made much progress, I am still not quite where I would like to be. However, I’d like to invite leaders to reframe this whole concept: rather than try to strike a 50/50 balance between work and personal life, perhaps it would be more effective and less frustrating to harmonize our work and personal life.

What I mean by that is that we have different seasons, and life is dynamic, not static. So, rather than strive for balance or a 50/50 split between my work and personal life, I seek to find the right mix that feels good: when life is harmonious, I feel energized, healthier, more aligned, and in flow.

I do this by checking in with myself because sometimes I tend to spread myself too thin. I’ve learned to recognize the signs of burnout earlier; in my case, I get fatigue and joint pain because of fibromyalgia.  When I get the first hint, I know it is time to pull back and spread out my appointments to leave more room for self-care and downtime in my calendar. Also, of crucial importance is that I have learned to set boundaries, manage expectations, focus on priorities, to simplify processes, leverage technology and delegate more.

In a male-dominated industry, how have you overcome challenges and stereotypes to succeed as a woman entrepreneur?

I don’t feel that I have overcome it. Rather, it is an ongoing exercise in raising awareness to counteract unconscious biases. As nurturers, women tend to be recognized as solid career and life coaches, human resources managers, and experts in self-leadership or coaches for middle managers. While there have been advances with upcoming generations, when it comes to being considered as thought leaders or coaches for senior managers, we have yet to break through the glass ceiling, particularly with CEOs and VPs who are Gen-Xers or Boomers.

I can see why this happens as mainstream celebrity leadership experts, such as the late Bob Proctor, John C. Maxwell, Patrick Lencioni, Kouzes and Posner, etc., tend to fit the stereotype. Don’t get me wrong, I really admire what these men have done to advance organizational leadership, and I am grateful to have studied their work. However, society must recognize that women can also advise and coach top leaders just as well as any man.

Both men and women in senior management need to check their biases. Men also need to step up as allies, as everybody wins when more women get involved in leadership development at the highest levels of the organization.

What advice would you give to aspiring women entrepreneurs who are looking to make a mark in their respective industries?

I suggest they practice the 8 Ps of Ignition that I introduced in the book Light A Fire In Their Hearts. They are Profundity, Passion, Purpose, Perseverance, Professionalism, Play, Philanthropy, and Prosperity. We also need to support one another and not listen when we are told that we need to ‘play the game’ or ‘be mean’ to get ahead. This is what keeps us down as a collective. We need to stop playing small and get out of our comfort zones to be seen and to share our platform with others so that we can all get an opportunity to shine.

What are your thoughts on the evolving landscape of entrepreneurship and business in the 21st century?

Entrepreneurs play an essential part in shaping the landscape and driving its evolution. My hope is that through our businesses and our life’s work, we influence socio-economic forces toward doing what is good for people and the planet. We need to hold ourselves, politicians, and community leaders accountable for driving the economy to grow and realize profits in healthier and more sustainable ways. We have the power to influence consumer behaviours through our advertising, research, speaking, writing and storytelling. Let’s help the masses make better choices that will help humanity and all living beings stick around a while longer and strive for a better world for all.
